Giant Kelp
The world’s largest marine plant, Giant Kelp can grow to over 100 feet long and usually lives at rocky shores at depths to 80 feet. They occur at many “cold water” seashores in both northern and southern hemisperes. A root-like mass called a “holdfast” at the base of the plant holds tightly to rock surfaces. Tiny new blades develop at the end of the stipe (stem). Many stipes can branch off from one holdfast.
